Georgian Bay, Ontario

Explore the wonders of Georgian Bay and its surroundings

Georgian Bay is a hidden treasure located in the province of Ontario, Canada. With over 30,000 islands, beautiful waterways and abundant wildlife, this region offers a unique experience for travellers.

Located east of Lake Huron, the bay is surrounded by the Bruce Peninsula and 3 of Ontario’s most popular provincial parks: Algonquin, French River and Killarney as well as the stunning Manitoulin Island. This piece of land is also the largest freshwater island in the world. Its Anishinabe name means “Great Spirit” and for good reason: the island contains the wisdom of a millennial civilization. You can easily make a tour of it by including a witness to the rich Aboriginal culture of the region, the superb Chi-Cheemaun, the ferry linking Tobermory to Manitoulin Island, for a pleasant ride on crystal clear waters. Remember to book to avoid disappointment.

Georgian Bay is bordered by many picturesque towns, such as Midland where we discovered several cycle paths in enchanting wooded environments or along the coast, Collingwood and its impressive network of shared trails (www.collingwood.ca/trails) including several pass by the pretty park of Sunset Point Beach which is perfect for a picnic, the famous Blue Mountain Resort, popular with Torontonians in the winter for downhill skiing and equally popular with families for all the summer activities offered, not to mention Parry Sound, known for its many water activities.

This magnificent clear body of water is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Whether you enjoy kayaking, sailing, scuba diving or simply relaxing on a beach, you will find plenty of opportunities to enjoy the area’s crystal clear waters. The islands in the bay offer secluded coves, soft sand beaches and shallow waters, ideal for the whole family.

The region has a most interesting history that will allow you to discover the ancestral universe of the first residents of northern Ontario lands, the Aboriginal peoples who have inhabited it for millennia, before the arrival of European explorers in the 17th century. Georgian Bay is named after King George III and was an important economic center for fishing and the fur trade.

Georgian Bay is also rich in cultural heritage. The area is known for its many museums, art galleries, and festivals that highlight the history and culture of Indigenous peoples, European settlers, and contemporary communities. Parry Sound, for example, has been the location of several film and television shoots for several years (Northern Rescue, The Breach, Eyewitness, Wickensburg).

The towns that line the Georgian Bay also offer a rich culinary experience. Guests can enjoy fresh seafood, local dishes made with fresh ingredients, and craft beers at the many restaurants and breweries in the area. Be sure to taste the delicious local products, such as maple syrup and artisanal cheeses, for which the region is famous.

Georgian Bay and its surroundings are an ideal destination for travelers seeking adventure, natural beauty and cultural discovery. Whether you are a lover of nautical activities, a history buff or simply looking for relaxation, this region will seduce you. Take the time to explore the islands, immerse yourself in the region’s rich history and sample the local flavors. Georgian Bay promises an unforgettable experience.
