Pre-departure inspection
Before setting off on an adventure you need to make sure that everything is in perfect working order to avoid disasters. You must always keep in mind that breakages rarely happen when conditions are perfect and everything is going well. If the weather changes, sailing conditions deteriorate and you can be sure that this is when a mechanical problem will rear its ugly head. It is better to prevent and carry out a careful visual inspection before starting the engines. Here are the points to verify:
- Check oil in engines and transmission
- Check tension on alternator and water pump belts
- Check the refrigerant level
- Check that there are no oil, fuel or coolant leaks around or under the engines
- Check that there is no water in the water separator filters (e.g. Racor)
- Check that there is no water in the bilge.
- Perform the same procedure with the generator every 5-10 hours of use.
