Winnipeg: A dynamic city in the heart of Canada

Located in the heart of the Canadian prairies, Winnipeg is the capital of the province of Manitoba.

This dynamic city offers a unique combination of culture, history, natural beauty and economic opportunities. From the Festival du Voyageur to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the city offers a multitude of attractions and activities for visitors.

The city of Winnipeg has a rich history dating back to the times of the First Nations who made it a meeting point at the intersection of the Red River and the Assiniboine River more than 6,000 years ago. In the 18th century, it became an important trading post for fur trappers. In 1873, Winnipeg was the focal point of the Canadian Pacific and Canadian Northern railways, making it a key transportation hub and facilitating its rapid growth.

Winnipeg is known for its vibrant cultural scene. The Exchange District is famous for its historic architecture and is home to many theaters, art galleries and production studios. Be sure to visit the Winnipeg Human Rights Museum, an iconic site and remarkable architectural structure that highlights past atrocities while encouraging discussions about human rights today. Allow 2 to 4 hours to visit it and don’t miss the view from the 8th floor tower which is splendid!

The Forks

The Forks, a national historic park located at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, is another popular place to enjoy walks, restaurants and entertainment. This mecca of Canadian Indigenous history will amaze you and allow you to realize the contribution of the First Nations to the evolution of our country.

Take advantage of your visit to take a pontoon ride on the river and learn more about the importance of these waterways, the history of the city and its inhabitants as well as the 1950 flood and the canal bypass constructed to prevent such a disaster from happening again. We loved our little cruise with Ryan from Splash Dash who had lots of interesting anecdotes and recommendations to help us better enjoy our visit.

Francophonie

The city of Saint-Boniface, just across the magnificent Provencher  Bridge, is the cradle of French-speaking culture and heritage, and the Saint-Boniface Museum offers a fascinating insight into Winnipeg’s French-speaking history. Although the province is not bilingual, it has more French speakers than New Brunswick.

Entrance to the Museum is free on Thursdays during French Thursdays where several activities are also organized for the community on the promenade along the river. A stone’s throw away, the facade of the cathedral, which burned in 1968, remains today a symbol of perseverance for the French-speaking people of this city.

Royal Canadian Mint

On our way into town, we stopped at the Royal Canadian Mint Factory which produces 15 million coins per day for both Canada and many countries around the world. The visit, lasting 45 minutes, is very informative and worth the trip to understand the process behind the production of coins in circulation in our country.

A cultural city

Winnipeg is known for its vibrant arts scene and passion for the arts. The city is home to many art galleries, such as the Winnipeg Art Gallery, which exhibits works by local and international artists. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious ballet companies, is based in Winnipeg. Music lovers can also enjoy the many music festivals held throughout the year, ranging from classical to jazz to rock. The choice of good restaurants is also interesting and we were seduced by the Fort Garry hotel for its historic side, but the quality of the dishes and the service were there!

To make your visit more informative, you can opt for one of the many self-guided walking tours on your phone that will take you to important places like The Forks and sometimes unusual (Haunted Places Tour) of the city and will help you discover its story at your own pace. The city is also very accessible by bike, which allows you to cover a greater distance and appreciate several neighborhoods in a short time.

Winnipeg is much more than just a city on the Canadian prairies. It is a destination that offers a variety of attractions, a vibrant cultural scene, rich history and surrounding natural beauty. Whether you are interested in art, culture, sports or nature, Winnipeg has something to offer for everyone.
